Street restaurants start their daily preparation early. Just before 6:30am, I pass one of these make-shift street kitchens in Central, where the stench and intensity of garlic being cooked off hits me. Something about the smell immediately conjures a knowledge of the huge wide heavy metal wok, the slick of oil and then the garlic dumped into the heat. The onward passage as it goes into dishes of fatty pork or steamed greens, seafood freshly caught and bought from the markets, is already promised

Beneath the beautiful old mulberry tree at the front of my parent’s cottage there is a large green tarpaulin. This waterproof expanse has been laid out flat to receive falling mulberries, the fruit of the gods when you get one that’s perfectly ripe, which they mostly are at the end of July. Dad has been instructing me on this season’s system for the harvesting, but was pleased when I was able to shimmy up the tree and bounce on the branches causing a downpour of fruit into his tarpaulin net.Once
