    On Dunwich beach in February 2026, between the heath and Minsmere sluice, I stumbled on thousands of ‘cuttlebones’, the hard boney part of cuttlefish, that had washed up on an exceptionally high tide, along with the usual assortment of beach junk — brightly coloured string, plastic waste, sea-worn branches, and seaweed.After researching these curious creatures, I was surprised to find that they were used for casting metal, especially by jewellers, and are still in use today by artisan metalsmith
