On Christmas Eve, 1914, something happened in the trenches of Belgium that military commanders on both sides found deeply alarming.As darkness fell, German soldiers began placing candles along their parapets. Then came singing, with carols drifting across no man’s land—the strip of mud, wire, and frozen ground where men had been dying for months. British soldiers heard the singing from their trenches and began singing back. Then someone climbed out of the trench, unarmed, with his hands raised.<
