    GAP, Pa. — The history of the McIlvaine Barn in eastern Lancaster County is permanently carved into its boards. The enormous double-decker stone barn was built in 1817 when the farm was owned by the McIlvaine family. On the outside, sturdy stone walls extending to the roof define it as a historical landmark in the area. But inside, unique architecture, massive boards and a bevy of carvings spanning centuries give the structure unmatched character. A double-decker barn is actually three levels.
