The scoreboard didn’t tell the entire story last Friday night at Ely School Stadium. Powerful Mt. Iron-Buhl spoiled the Wolves’ Fall Homecoming celebration, cruising to a 54-8 high school football victory. Yet while the host Timberwolves fell to 0-3 in what, at first glance, looked like a lopsided affair, the hosts had some shining moments in the opening half. The boys placed fourth among 12 teams while the girls were fifth in an 11-team field at the Sept. 3 Rock Ridge Invitational, but the standings told just part of the story. Several Ely boys had fast times out of the gate and the Timberwolves only trailed larger schools Hibbing and Hermantown and were within striking distance of section rival Greenway/ Nashwauk-Keewatin.

Progress is coming in small but measurable steps for the Ely Timberwolves. A year ago, section powerhouse Barnum dominated the high school football team and rolled to a 46-0 win, but the rematch in this year’s season- opener was more tightly contested. Ely was competitive for much of the first half and reached the end zone twice in a more respectable, 38-14 defeat in this year’s clash, held Sept. 3 at Barnum.
