When a room reads you for filth (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Most of us can already explain why a room makes us feel a certain way, we just never had to say it out loud. A cramped stairwell or a windowless closet reads as claustrophobic instantly, your shoulders file the complaint before your brain even opens the ticket. A vast, soaring hall does the opposite. Walk into the Hagia Sophia, or the Sagrada Família, and look up at a dome or a ceiling someone spent decades of their life obsessing over, and something in you goes small and amazed at the same time
