Ely Street Poet - Grapes of life (opens the original)
Read excerpt
I picked all of the grapes last week. The just-right combination of time and temperature and diligent watering or lack there-of had shaken-not-stirred the large deeply purple fruit into perfection. Their skins had begun to burst and their seeds softened just a bit. The fruit was outstanding. The day I harvested the fair portion of a five-gallon bucket full was the day after we noticed that the wasps had noticed the concords as well. I had seen a few wasps crawling sneakily all over the leaves of

On the edge of the weeds the bass are biting. They can feel that summer is retreating; they sense their long wait is coming again. They’re hungry and when we hook into them they fight. Through the tannin stained water their backs flash with bronze reflections against the afternoon sun. It was a continuation of what Ely, Babbitt and Tower came together for last weekend in place of a cancelled festival. It was small town magic. Something, I think, that we all may be the very best at, whether we realize it or not. Sure, we’ve won several contests… “the best little town” o
Ely Street Poet - Catching...fish (opens the original)
Read excerpt
These hot days are all blurring together, but last Friday afternoon we ventured out during one of the hottest spells to fish for an hour or so. I wanted to feel cool water on my feet and find some shade. Do some casting, do some bobber watching and worm swimming. Just to find a place with a bit of a breeze and enjoy that breeze coming up off the water. To stand with Jen in a little bit of current and imagine that I was a kid again and that this time I knew her and she knew me. Sometimes I do dre
