To Take Delight In (opens the original)
Read excerpt

My Grandma Taught Me to Press Flowers (opens the original)
Read excerpt
I don’t remember how old I was, but I remember the flower press that I’ve since lost. The replacement I got online has all these bells and whistles—special scissors and other tools—but my grandma’s was just a few pieces of square cardboard and a simple screw at each end. One summer, we pressed a couple of her yellow and purple pansies that grew in a box on her front porch and stuck them in a gold heart frame. I’m pretty sure it’s still sitting on the desk in my childhood room twenty years later.
