A no bullshit guide to LLMs (opens the original)
Read excerpt
A no bullshit guide to LLMsI’m busy preparing for posit::conf() so no new content this week, but I thought you might enjoy this write up of a talk I gave about a year ago at useR! 2025. I find it interesting to reflect on just how much has changed in the last 12 months. Not least, the agentic coding revolution where now LLMs are writing the majority of code for most software engineers (including me!). And Claude is no longer my favourite model given how it’s become even more relatively expensive
AI outside of work (opens the original)

I’m going on vacation for the next two weeks, so I thought it might be fun to share some of my non-work uses of AI. I hope it’ll encourage you to share too, since swapping personal wins is such a great way to learn. At work, I’m lucky to have a weekly meeting where a bunch of us share what we’ve learned about AI, and that really helps keep me anchored in what’s useful today. For example, I’d been hearing a lot of good things about Kimi K3, so this week I made it (and Posit Assistant) my daily dr
Illustrating my slides with AI (opens the original)

Since we’re on the topic of talks, I wanted to describe my process for generating the illustrations I use for my slides. Two years ago I primarily used royalty-free stock photography, but now I use images generated by AI (first via ChatGPT but now with Gemini). Over that time my workflow has evolved substantially, and I think it’s reached the point where others might find it interesting and useful.<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!DDAR!,f_
y code when ai? (opens the original)

I’ve given this talk on my feelings about AI and coding quite a few times (mostly recently for an ASA webinar), and I’ve decided I need to stop giving it and do something new. So to force myself to do that I’ve written it up for you all 🙂.Before I get into the context, you might be interested in the process, since it also leans heavily on AI:I started by asking Claude to download the video from youtube, since I can never remember how to do it myself. Then I used MacWhisper to crea
Auto mode knows it's dangerous (and does it anyway) (opens the original)
Read excerpt
This week I discovered that auto mode isn’t quite as safe as I thought. I’ve been thinking about how we tell people to install air and other command line tools. We use the standard practice, which is to tell you to run a command that downloads and runs an install script, e.g. curl -LsSf https://github.com/posit-dev/air/releases/latest/download/air-installer.sh | sh. This is a standard way to distribute command line tools (and indeed this script was built by cargo-dist, a Rust binary distribution
