I Wanted to Be Needed. I Just Didn’t Know It Would Be All Day. (opens the original)

One of my most memorable postpartum breakdowns was about naps when my son was four-months old. Why won’t he nap more than 45 minutes?! Why can’t I just have a few minutes to myself? When does this end? And why can’t I enjoy this more? Postpartum anxiety may have been part of it (I wrote about it here).Fast forward, and the 45-minute nap stage only lasted maybe six weeks. Those six weeks felt like eternity. My brain convinced me the 45 min nap period would never end and that my life would always

Dear Mom going back to work, This is incredibly hard. In fact, it is probably one of the hardest things you have had to do since becoming a mom. Leaving your baby can feel unnatural, like you should not be apart from them. You likely do not want to be apart from them, but you have to be, and it can feel like your heart is being ripped out and then have to be in two places at once. How are you supposed to focus at work, sit in a meeting, answer an email, or care about whatever everyone is discussi

Dear Bix, my beloved bernedoodle,I know I said the kids would never replace you, but that was before I was a mom. Before I was a mom, you were my kid. I dressed you up. I took you to meet Santa. I had a bakery make you a birthday cake that looked like you.We did meetups with your littermates, and you even had your own Instagram account. You were my everything. When I first tested positive for pregnancy, you knew before anyone else. You had this sixth sense and always wanted to be with me in bed for
Why Can't Motherhood Just Be Easy? (opens the original)

Some nights I leave my son’s room convinced I have just ruined him.I’m trying to put him to bed. He’s relentless. I’m exhausted. If this sounds familiar, I’ve been here before. Clearly this is a common theme, as I think this is my third Substack post I’ve written about it.I keep my composure for 90% of the time. One book. Two if he goes poop. Three songs and a snuggle. One song and a back rub. Favorite part about our day, affirmations, hug, kiss, shut the door. Back 12 more times. He knows bette
When Breastfeeding Starts Affecting Your Mental Health (opens the original)
Read excerpt
I wanted to breastfeed. I just did not realize how much of my postpartum life would revolve around it.For both sons I had to triple feed. Both sons needed to be fed every 2 hours. Which effectively meant I would spend 30 min feeding by bottle, 30 min pumping, 30 min breastfeeding. That left only 30 min for me to live life. It was utterly exhausting. Breastfeeding is so nuanced because when it is going well, it can feel so simple. Your baby is hungry, you feed them. You know how to comfort them.
