Jessica Cuello is one of my favorite living poets, a favorite human, and she happens to be a high school French teacher. Her poem below quietly and beautifully addresses the sometimes (often?) absurd experience of sitting through staff meetings and/or staff development, when the real work—the deep, heart work—is already happening. A masterclass on imagery and syntax, we will use this poem to inspire our own.<a class="image-link image2" href="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1477414348463-c0eb7f

How have you resisted, managed or embraced melancholy, burnout or rage?<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1649920442906-3c8ef428fb6e?crop=entropy&cs=tinysrg

About a mile from where I now live, there is a church parking lot where if you hit it at dusk, will gift you with the most spectacular sky. Near the trees, there are often deer that watch me, alert and unmoving. It’s as though we are all waiting for something to happen. The trees seem unsettled but there is no wind.
