I Support Israel and I Am Not A Zionist (opens the original)

    Episode notes · Critical tone

    Read excerpt

A word's only job is to communicate, and Jewish tradition has always been willing to retire, rename, or route around a word once it stops doing that job, without abandoning what the word was created to protect. “Zionism” was coined to communicate one specific idea: the Jewish people's right to self-determination in their historic homeland. For a large share of the audience Jews most need to reach today, it no longer transmits that. That's not a PR problem that is the word failing at its one job.

Anti Israel or Antisemitism (opens the original)

    Episode notes

    Read excerpt

I built a test to tell anti-Israel from antisemitism. Here are the three questions. One: is the criticism aimed at a government's actions — or at Jewish people generally? A government, fine. Jews as a group, that's the line. Two: is it a double standard? Would you use this exact language for any other country doing the exact same thing — or does the outrage only show up for the one Jewish country on earth? Three: is it criticizing how a government acts, or denying the Jewish people get a country

Being Jewish Does Not Automatically Make You A Zionist (opens the original)

    Episode notes

    Read excerpt

Can you be Jewish and not be a Zionist? Can you be a Zionist and not be Jewish? You already know these two words get treated like they're the same word, and they're not. Tonight we're taking them apart. Not with a textbook. Not with a hundred years of history dumped on you in one breath. Just two words, what they actually mean, and — this is the part people are going to have feelings about — one very concrete thing I think our synagogues should stop doing so this distinction actually shows up in

Convert to Judaism and Get Rich (opens the original)

    Episode notes

    Read excerpt

Tonight, a public service announcement. I'm about to make you an offer that very few rabbis in three thousand years have had the courage to make honestly: you want to be rich? Convert. Come on in. The water — and apparently the money — is fine. I mean it. Everyone knows the deal. Jews have money. So if you want money, become one of us. Simple math. Let's do the math together tonight. What are you waiting for! Ladies and gentlemen! Step right up, step right up! Tonight — and tonight ONLY — the of

Nuke Pickaxe Mountain to End the War with Iran (opens the original)

    Episode notes

    Read excerpt

There's a mountain in Iran. And right now, U.S. officials are seriously debating whether to drop a nuclear weapon on it. It's called Pickaxe Mountain. And in the next 20 minutes, I'm going to give you the case FOR that and the case AGAINST it — straight from Jewish tradition, which has been arguing about exactly this for two thousand years.
