Book Review - The Sea-King and the Sorceress: Life and Death in the Viking Age by Neil Price (opens the original)

    Excerpt · Positive tone

    Read excerpt

I really enjoyed Neil Price’s last book - The Children of Ash and Elm - and I’m a huge fan of his work in general so I was thrilled to be sent an ARC of his latest book to review. Like all Price’s work this is well written and hugely detailed, as well as expansive in scope - offering the reader a glimpse into the world of the vikings.<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!DbSH!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post

St Blane's, Isle of Bute (opens the original)

    Excerpt · Neutral tone

    Read excerpt

Last year we attempted to visit St Blane's but got a little lost and gave up due to bad weather. This year I was determined to visit regardless of any possible bad weather. Fortunately the rain held off as my brother and I trekked up a hill towards a site we could not see. When we reached the plateau I was blown away, it was worth the effort!<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!M1rE!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubsta

Book Review - A Medieval Miscellany by Robert Bartlett (opens the original)

    Excerpt · Positive tone

    Read excerpt

I was excited to be sent an ARC of this book, I’m a big fan of Professor Bartlett’s work - if you haven’t read his book The Making of Europe: Conquest, Colonisation and Cultural Change 950-1350 you definitely should! - and this new book sounds amazing. I was really interested to see which of the 100 voices from the Middle Ages that the cover of this book promises Professor Bartlett had selected. <a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Cdti!,f_au

Viking Repton - Part 2. (opens the original)

    Excerpt

    Read excerpt

Today we return to the Vikings at Repton, to take a look at what archaeology actually uncovered there. The following is based up archaeological reports from the site. The excavations at Repton followed a geophysical survey and targeted possible archaeological features near to the church. Test pits were put in, followed by large trenches. The excavations quickly revealed the presence of a large defensive ditch which abbutted St Wystan’s church, which appears to have acted as a sort of gatehouse.

Book Review - The Viking Conquest of England by Brandon M Bender. (opens the original)

    Excerpt

    Read excerpt

The Bayeux tapestry’s arrival in England means that right now everyone is talking about the Norman invasion and conquest of England, and 1066 is the date they all have on their mind. But before the Normans, there was another conquest of England, one which is largely forgotten, that of the Vikings. Brandon M Bender’s new book - The Viking Conquest of England: How Danish monarchs ruled from 1013-1042 - published last week seeks to shed light on this forgotten conquest and bring to life the story o
