There is No Such Thing as a Recovery Run (opens the original)

    Excerpt

    Read excerpt

This topic is one that’s griped me for a while, and I must admit I thought this one may cause some controversy, but judging by feedback on social media, it seems I’m not the only one. I have a problem with the phrase ‘recovery run’. Let me explain why:The concept of a recovery run, and the ‘science’ behind it often goes something like this: A nice slow run allows blood flow around the body which can help recovery. Or something along these lines at least.Unfortunately this is basically not true.

The Road to London Marathon 2027 - Let’s talk volume (opens the original)

    Excerpt

    Read excerpt

For the second of my weekly posts about my journey to London Marathon 2027, going from a scientist that can barely run a 5k back in April (shameful, I know!). To a scientist using data and scientific understanding of endurance to see how good a marathon I can run in 2027. As mentioned last week, my focus ever since I started running again is increasing volume, so this post will eb all about:The importance of increasing volume, and how to do it safely. My race plan between now and London Marathon.

I Will Be Running the 2027 London Marathon - here’s how I’m going to use it to spread science (opens the original)

    Excerpt

    Read excerpt

As I watched Sebastian Sawe smash the sub 2 barrier last April, I grappled with an itch that I have had since I was a child growing up watching the London Marathon on TV. I have never been motivated by marathons particularly, I attempted my first ultramarathon which is still, to this day, the only time I’ve run beyond marathon distance. I completed a further 38km (albeit very slowly), as part of an 80km run. But there is one Marathon that I’ve always wanted to do, and entered the ballot every ye

I passed my PhD Viva, but what did my PhD research find? (opens the original)

    Excerpt

    Read excerpt

After 7 long years of studying my PhD alongside working and other life commitments, earlier this week I had my viva, and passed with minor corrections. A moment that has been many years in the making, and though concerned about it feeling anti-climatic, I can confirm it’s been the opposite. I have spent the last 5 days thinking incessantly about what comes next, goals with research, science communication (getting closer to going all in on a book), and professional goals. Doing a PhD is the harde

Is Doping Still Happening in Elite Sport, and What are Athletes Taking? (opens the original)

    Excerpt · Critical tone

    Read excerpt

A quick note before I start. I am pleased to announce I’ll be running the London Marathon 2027, raising money for Hospice UK, a national charity that campaigns to improve care for everyone facing the end of their life. I will always keep my posts on here and on my other social media channels free (I believe science communication should always be free, otherwise as scientists, we aren’t really trying to share science!). But if you want to support me at all I would greatly appreciate any donation
