The Sandwich Life

Trying to create a life with joy despite the grief of losing an utterly beloved husband in 2026 and also coming to terms with losing my mobility. Still lots of thoughts on music, our roadsides and landscapes, architecture, antiques, and more.

Cool Hands on your Forehead (opens the original)

    Excerpt

    Read excerpt

Feeling much better, albeit still wiped out. Today would have been my mother’s 97th birthday. She has of course been sadly missed since 2010. I’ve been missing her a lot of late. Any time I end up sick with a fever I always crave the feel of her cool hand on my forehead and I craved it yet again last week. No hands on my forehead anymore. I will always miss her.<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!nNtO!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep

I’m a bit better. No more fever. Head is a rock but my nose isn’t running as much and throat no longer feels like a knife when I cough. I worked as long as I could today and finally decided I was getting a diminishing rate of return so I gave in and stopped. I heated something up from the freezer and ate it. Eh. It was spicy, otherwise I couldn’t taste much. It did its job. I watched TV for a bit. I finally gave up and turned to YouTube. Now I’m sitting here listening to the Vertebrats, middle se

I worked a lot on Sunday and Monday (trying to work ahead a bit as I’ll be out for a few weeks for my surgery) and that felt good and then on Tuesday Susan kindly carted me over to Bloomington for a test that Carle in Champaign hadn’t been able to schedule for me. Maybe I should have realized that something was off when I managed to forget things, sending Susan back and forth to find things for me, on top of losing a hearing aid. I still have

I’m enjoying this rainy, rumbly day. I’m sitting here trying to get my mind and calendar coordinated. Things are starting to heat up for my surgery, or FUSION CERVICAL/THORACIC - POSTERIOR WITH INSTRUMENTATION; posterior spinal fusion with instrumentation from C2 to T3, laminectomy with foraminotomies from C3 to T1, allograft, autograft, bone morphogenetic protein, and spinal cord monitoring to be exact. Dear Ernie (opens the original)

    Excerpt

    Read excerpt

Dear Ernie,Lord, I am missing you so much. The last week has been rough. I think it was the first time I experienced something really hard since I lost you. And muddling through it without you has made me miss you even more. I missed you so much it’s like my body was burning with pain. I’m ok though. I promise. And I’m doing my damndest to make you proud. I’m trying to support the boys as much as I can and not burden them too much either. Remember how you’d joke, saying, “I don’t want to be a bu
