Owning It Without the Ego (opens the original)

There is a strange discomfort in saying a firing went well.I have noticed it in myself and I have noticed it in other makers. Something in us wants to hedge the moment a pot turns out exactly right. It was probably just luck. The glaze did most of the work. I got lucky with the kiln atmosphere that day. Some of that hedging is honest, because plenty of what happens in a kiln really is outside your control. But some of it is just discomfort with claiming credit, as if saying that went well becaus

I have enough pots for my table at the Covered Bridge festival. That is what I told myself on Sunday after I threw 24 bowls before an overtime shift at the big paper factory ate the rest of the day. The festival opens October 8th at the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds, nine days from now, and my third of the booth will be full. The problem is what comes after. I have been getting more sleep as I have been going to bed a little earlier, and I wake up feeling a little better. I found that when I show up at the big paper factory, I am ready to work, and others have to tell me to slow down some. That might sound strange, but I do get antsy just sitting around planning. If only I coul

Not Taking It Personally (opens the original)

    Excerpt

    Read excerpt

I have started to notice that both failure and success can trick you into believing they are about you personally, when most of the time they are just about the thing that happened. When a pot cracks in the kiln and the immediate response is to make it mean something about me as a potter. Most of the time a cracked pot is not a verdict on my worth. It is information about moisture, wall thickness, cooling speed, or a dozen other variables that had almost nothing to do with who I am as a person a
