When I first walked into the Filmhouse Cinema in Edinburgh in the early nineties and saw IN THE SOUP for the first time, I swapped places with a kindred soul. Is the word transubstantiation? Probably. By the way, the Filmhouse is a magical place, please explore and participate when you find yourself in the gale force windy city…The Paris Refuge is a reader-supported public

Here is a little backstory for the project you are seeing above. It was directed by my former student Lazzat Bolatkyzy from Kazakhstan. She has a wicked sense of humour and a talent for properly harnassing chaos. The perfect person to adapt an absurdist song like ANSWERS. I am very proud of the work she did here. Not so secret love for "The Secret Agent" (opens the original)

    Excerpt · Neutral tone

    Read excerpt

Yes, I knew it was a Cannes aware winner: best director for Filho and best actor for Wagner Moura. Yes, I knew that it had been heaped with praise by critics and Oscar buzz but I just could not bring myself to see it in the theatre in Paris at the time. Yes, I knew everyone else was seeing it but the cinematic mojo was just not rubbing off on me.

The Bathroom Key (opens the original)

“I want you to guard this key. This key is very precious to me. You must guard it with you and not take your eyes off of it. I want it back afterwards. You are responsible. Do you hear me? You are responsible!” The hot sun in Sicily had been heating up the volcanic sand beneath my feet all day. I skipped across it, not daintily, but effectively. I was making my way from our coveted bivouac to civilization. We had managed to claim our territory next to the shoreline early in the day. We had learn
