A few weeks ago, when we were firmly in the middle of summer, with no anxiety yet about it ending, I sat on a porch with a friend and listened to him rant about writers and their newsletters. It amazes me, my friend said, how many people out there believe they have something to say, something that’s worth reading.This might have stung, but I don’t think my friend knows I have a newsletter (just checked—he doesn’t subscribe). And anyway, I know that this guy fundamentally misunderstands writers.
