Every other year a famous newspaper or magazine posts a list of recommended reading, usually claiming a so-called ‘canon of literature’ which most – if not all of the time – consists of male authors with a handful of female authors sprinkled in. It’s a pretty reliable phenomenon that then creates a bit of havoc, counter-lists are published, famous authors are quoted and then we forget all about it until the next one comes around. I rarely pay attention to these culture wars, but they do amuse me
