To clear my teeming brain, I walk across the crisp blonde fields of the South Downs. It’s a different country in the heatwave, these waves of heatwaves; like nothing I’ve seen before. Birds swirl over the fields, hot cows lie in what was a dew pond, flicking at the flies. The hills to my right are deep purple but the trees are still green. They can withstand anything, these downland shrubs. They keep their green flags flying. I realise I don’t walk alone any more, since the dog died over a year
