The Orioles never dominated Baltimore’s sports scene more than in the club’s final years at Memorial Stadium. They were no longer one of the American League’s elites, as they’d been from the late ‘60s through the early ‘80s, but they hadn’t drawn the crowds they deserved in those years because pro football’s Colts commanded so much attention. After the Colts left for Indianapolis in 1984, though, Baltimore fiercely embraced its only remaining team. The Orioles’ maneuverings generated headlines.
