Markets confuse price with value. Then they forget they did it. This essay leans, of course, on Adam Smith. Not the Smith everyone quotes, though. The Wealth of Nations gets cited constantly. Its companion, The Theory of Moral Sentiments, barely gets a mention. But markets, in Smith’s telling, only work inside a moral frame.
