Serbin: Where shall we turn at 9/11 time? Psychology, philosophy or poetry? (opens the original)
Read excerpt
The problem with overthinkers is always trying to figure out some deep issue. Who has answers? Philosophers, psychologists or poets? I’m always trying understand who we are as human beings, how we became that person, where we go from here, with an unknown future. My constant philosophical guidepost is “know thyself.” Before the psychologists and poets, I’ll explain today’s inspiration. I started composing three days after the 25-year observance of the Sept. 11 attack in New York City. I say NYC,
Serbin: Seasons change but her love for September is constant (opens the original)

Encore! This is the second time, or maybe more, I’ve written about loving September. I find things we love become more special with passing years. I’m writing on Sept. 1, happy as one can be about a fresh month, particularly when it leads into a new season. For those preferring summer, accept my apology, or simply skip this attempt to win you over, although I’ll try. My affection for the month probably began with back-to-school enthusiasm, bringing new outfits and perfect school supplies. Later

Greetings. In two weeks, we wrap up August, and the traditional summer. But first, this piece about my past weekend. It’s probably clear, these columns come from personal experience and perspective. Please focus on the “in” part of “in-law.” For the last half century, I have had this second famil

It’s hard to know where to start on this piece. Perhaps with the saying, “you can’t get there from there.” But I’d rather start with Spunky, my VW Beetle. We had an interesting summer, and it isn’t over yet. Yes, I’m one of those people who names a car. I’m super fond of this one. I get lots of comments from my generation who, unlike me, had a Beetle back in the day, and have all kinds of memories. Spunky is the latest, and likely the last, in a long list of cars I’ve had, and can’t even remembe
Serbin: Let’s get a new perspective on being ‘old’ (opens the original)
Read excerpt
When creating this column, I embraced the saying, “Write what you know.” I named the column Talkin’ ‘Bout My Generation because I knew about “boomers” ageing. Or so I thought. At the time I wrote, “to understand getting old, you have to be there.” Since then, I’ve discovered getting old is a journey with surprises, unknowns and challenges. I knew I was old by the definition “elderly adults 65 and older.” The classification appears to have been established according to Social Security and Medicar
