Wood, Wax, and Nerves (opens the original)

Right before I began this current contract job, I finished a prototype for next year’s exhibit. I’m quite pleased and excited about how it turned out, given it’s my first foray into something I’d only ever thought about in my head. I researched different materials such as acrylic paints and gels, wood panels, and wax finishes, all of which were new to me. Despite the nerves, I allowed myself to enjoy the making of it and the grace when mistakes happened as I dove into unknown territory. I’ve mis

The 108 Muni bus from Treasure Island to downtown San Francisco was arriving in fifteen minutes. Still Life (opens the original)

The word “still life” popped up in my head yesterday morning. The way my brain works, I get curious, and I asked myself one question: where did the word originate as it relates to the visual arts? Down I went into a rabbit hole.Stilleven, a Dutch term meaning motionless model, appears in art dealers’ inventories in the Netherlands around 1650. In 18th-century France, they called it nature morte — dead nature. Prior to this, a French historiographer and secretary to the Academy named André Félibi
