172. Revisiting Oamaru (opens the original)

In my previous post, I shared photos I took in small towns during a day trip from Dunedin, New Zealand, to Oamaru. For this post, I selected a few of the photos I took in Oamaru on that sunny day. With a well-preserved precinct of 19th-century buildings constructed of distinctive, light-coloured Oamaru stone, this small coastal town is justifiably proud of its history and significant architectural heritage. The handsome old buildings in the historic area now house restaurants, bars, bakeries, and

New Zealand weather can turn quickly, especially in the South Island in early spring, when warm sunshine, cold southerlies, rain squalls and even snow can all arrive in a remarkably short time. We’ve had a lot of cloudy days in the last few weeks, and a fair amount of rain. The forecast for this past Tuesday was for clear skies and a high of 20°C for Dunedin, where I live, and for Oamaru, a town about 110 km north. I thought it would be a good day for a road trip. I recently discovered the photos from this year’s event in my Lightroom catalog and decided it was time to process, edit, and share a selection here.Dunedin (also known b

The transition from winter to spring here in New Zealand is marked by changeable weather with unpredictable swings in temperatures. Another cold rainy day recently drove me to the warmth and protection of the Dunedin Public Art Gallery. It’s conveniently located in The Octagon, the city’s civic centre; it’s open from 10AM to 5PM every day but Christmas Day, and entrance is free. I’m a frequent visitor.I’ve taken photos inside this gallery before, trying a different approach each time (3. A Visit

I normally avoid going out to take photos when it’s raining — and especially if it’s also cold and windy. I prefer sunny conditions, strong colours, and sharp shadows. My Sony A7V camera is not weatherproof, and it can be difficult to take photos when one hand is holding an umbrella. I take most of my photographs in Dunedin, New Zealand, the small city where I live, and I often return to the same places, buildings, and events I've photographed many times before. Habits, like geography, can be li
