Day 6 - Kerman to Yzad (opens the original)

    Excerpt

    Read excerpt

We have the morning to further explore Kerman. Our first stop is the Kerman Bazaar, six hundred years old and originally a caravansary. It encompasses three buildings constructed in the early 19th Century and includes a madrassa (school) built around a garden courtyard. Within the complex, which is about three-quarters of a mile across, are numerous markets selling rugs, spices, gold, clothing and household goods. The architecture is extraordinary, as we’ve come to expect.<a class="image-link im

After our interesting but monochrome morning, we get off the bus, and the first thing we see is a joyful group of lavender-clad schoolgirls with white hijabs, eight or ten years old, playing along a stream, picking roses and throwing the flowers into it, laughing and running. <a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!XBcL!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_p

Days 4 and 5 - Kerman (opens the original)

    Excerpt

    Read excerpt

We board a plane for Tehran, then fly to Kerman. It’s a “lost” day except for the discovery of Cafe Glace at the airport — cold coffee with ice cream and, possibly, some caramel syrup. The following day, our tour includes the Gonbad-e-Jabaliye, aka “Mountain of Stone,” and the Icehouse, a conical structure engineered to maintain cool temperatures.<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!wzuu!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2F
