Systems check: Why is a new neutral zone forecheck so important to these Stars? What does it have potential to fix or improve? (opens the original)

The Dallas Stars are one of the most interesting teams from a systems perspective in all of hockey, in part because there’s been zero consistency over the years. It wasn’t that long ago that they were a boring dump and chase team. It wasn’t that long ago that they were the best rush team in hockey. Now they’re a muddled mixture of everything that came before. A great offensive team one year, a great defensive team the next, but never have the twain met. Under Rick Bowness, Dallas was all about k
Previewing the Dallas Stars prospects this season, plus a way-too-early look at who they might target for the 2027 NHL Draft (opens the original)

While the NHL roster isn’t primed to add anyone of real consequence, we’re reaching that point where certain prospects are on the higher end of their development curve. To that end, this is a big season for the Texas Stars. Dylan Hryckowian, and Trey Taylor form the most borderline ready group of players who could see the proverbial chicken fingers in the pressbox should injuries hit. While I consider them emerging veterans more than prospects, we won’t quibble over semantics here. All three are
Stray observations: It wasn’t Game 7. But Dallas gets preseason revenge on Minnesota. (opens the original)

Preseason…is over. That was my first thought with preseason still active when I saw Dallas and Minnesota’s rosters. Except for Jake Oettinger, and Matt Duchene, all of the Stars regulars were in. The Wild weren’t screwing around either. Would we get the Game 7 action the world was so badly denied in this year’s playoffs? It didn’t start out that way. Early on, the final preseason game felt like two teams who didn’t like each other forced to scrimmage. There was animosity, but it was theatrical.

So close and yet so far. Three Western Conference Finals followed by a first-round exit. There should be nothing confusing about what this means in the broad strokes, but perhaps The Drama has clouded our judgment. After all, nothing has changed in terms of structure. Dallas single-handedly turned a lone draft into three lottery tickets, taking Miro Heiskanen, Jason Robertson, and Jake Oettinger in 2017. Some may disagree, but I personally count the best player at each respective position. It mi
Stray observations: Dallas beats Minnesota 2-0 in a non-Game 7 (opens the original)

It feels like only yesterday that the Wild came into town and ripped the heart right out of every Stars fan. But don’t worry. You’ll get the last laugh as soon as Quinn Hughes leaves for New Jersey (kidding?). Of course, tonight’s game had very little in common with the two teams that met each other last. It was a relatively tepid affair, as you’d expect from a preseason game, and players were getting their reps more than their steps. Whatever that means. While I did watch this game, I was multi
