Documenting Chennai’s architecture (opens the original)

    Excerpt · English

The Hindu’s boardroom witnessed a book release event earlier this week. It was a slim volume titled Chennai Contemporary Architecture, A Guide, written by A. Srivathsan and Fiona Evangeline S. The book was brought out by The Hindu Group of Publications and the Chennai Architecture Foundation. Receiving the first copy, I could not help but reflect on how this book brings us up to date on the city’s buildings. In his speech, Srivathsan reflected on Madras/Chennai being lucky in its chroniclers

The boundary pillars of Chennai’s Chepauk (opens the original)

Last week, I was asked by Chennai Super Kings to conduct a tour on the cricketing history of Chepauk. This was for the benefit of some of their super fans. It was great fun, with some of them being better at the game’s statistics than I was. But having written the 175th year book of the Madras Cricket Club in 2021, I could fill them in on some of the past. One of our early stops was the main entrance to the stadium, flanked by two ornamental pillars in the Indo-Saracenic style. A third stands

Tracing the history of a bank in Chennai through photos and film (opens the original)

Being an old movie buff (my preferred era, as the rest of my family mocks, is black and white with mono sound), I particularly enjoy scanning old Tamil films for scenes of Madras. These are not so easy to come by, as much of the action those days was on sets, well within studios. Last week, I struck gold: though having seen the film so many times earlier, I should have known what it contained. I allude to the 1952 film Parasakthi, which launched Sivaji Ganesan on his meteoric film career. Though

Madras: one name, many stories (opens the original)

    Excerpt · English

    Read excerpt

For years, I had determined that I would set down the various stories that keep circulating on how the name Madras came to be, and I kept putting it off. Last week, having to present a talk at the Madras Institute of Development Studies (MIDS), I finally got around to doing it. And so here goes. First, going by the Penneswaramadam inscription dating to the 14th century, the name Madraspattinam existed long before the English version. The Nayak’s grant of 1639 recognises it as an existing port an

Madras city on the move: a compilation (opens the original)

Excerpt · Neutral tone · English

    Read excerpt

Public transport is an abiding feature of city life. Madras that is Chennai is no different. As we look back at the history of this city, and trace farther back in time to eras when colonial Madras did not exist but several villages, which were absorbed into it certainly did, we see that stories of movement are a constant. Walking is the oldest mode and still survives despite every impediment in its way. The well-to-do rode on horses, were driven about in carriages, or carried in palanquins. The
