Content Warning. Refers to a sexual harassment / flasher. Refers to spiritual abuse and fear of death. When I talk about this time of my life, I refer to it as ‘the 19th autumn’ – I don’t recall the exact date, the exact month – just that sometime in that year, I was walking up a hill, in the dark, kicking autumn leaves, terrified the devil was about to get me.Autumn 1999I’m kicking soggy leaves along the pavement, as I slowly walk up the hill above my university.</s

Truthfully, they were uncomfortable ones, and weeks ago I should have ordered more online, I’ve avoided it. I know I have.<sp

    Bearing Witness (opens the original)

    Excerpt

    Read excerpt

Today I stood in the Victorian Parliament to hear the report tabled with the findings from the inquiry into cults and fringe groups. It wasn’t an easy thing to do.I chose to do it, to bear witness. I wanted to stand there, to see it tabled. I wanted to feel the presence of that report and its monumental significance to survivors. Survivors took risks to trust a process in that inquiry. They took a chance on a government inquiry, with a risk of personal retraumatisation, to submit over 250 times.
