As we cruise past the rugged shoreline and peaks of this massive island, it’s hard to reconcile the peaceful scene off our port side with the horrors that occurred here in World War II. From the water, Guadalcanal doesn’t look like a battlefield. The coastline rolls past in green folds, broken by the occasional village, river mouths, beaches, and the haphazard sprawl of the city of Honiara.
