High Society director Rachel Kavanaugh: âJukebox is often used disparagingly. But a jukebox musical can be brilliantâ (opens the original)

The jukebox musical is âthe cockroach of Broadwayâ, a prominent New York critic declared in 2018, reviewing another in the long line of theatrical tributes based on existing songbooks of popular artists. If you were to look at the current offerings on Broadway and the West End, the cockroaches have well and truly invaded. From MJ the Musical to Moulin Rouge, Mamma Mia to &Juliet, big commercial theatres are more than well served by familiar scores drawn from a catalogue of popular song. âS
Matilda the Musical in Dublin review: Still endlessly inventive, still an easy five stars (opens the original)

School is back, and with the new term comes a new touring production of Matilda the Musical, Dennis Kelly and Tim Minchinâs endlessly inventive stage version of Roald Dahlâs childrenâs book. Under a playful proscenium shaped by wooden blocks, a tireless cast of kids and adults animate the dark fairy tale with oodles of energy, bringing a perfectly balanced measure of grotesquerie and goodness to Dahlâs cautionary tale of a precocious girlâs thwarted genius. See also Mean Girls, by Tina Fey, with music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin, which was a film before it was a musical. This touring stage production makes a convincing case that it is superior to the source material, which Fey

Like many a small girl growing up at the end of the 1980s, Roald Dahlâs Matilda was the defining book of my childhood. The happy-family fantasies of American classics like Little Women or Little House on the Prairie meant little to me, while the privileged boarding school settings of Enid Blyton seemed just as culturally remote. Dahlâs suburban story of a bookish child taking revenge on the beastly adults who seemed to thwart her at every turn resonated deeply with my own sense of outrage at
