I recently came across a reference to an old London coaching inn with an evocative name. This is the Four Swans on Bishopsgate Street, Bishopsgate Within (which simply meant that the inn lay inside the Bishopsgate, one of the gates in the ancient defensive walls that once encircled the City). Of course, the voracious railways had swept all the coaching inns away, but the Four Swans lasted until 1873 in a diminished form.
