The dream (and difficulty) of seed saving (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Plants have always fascinated me. Animals too, of course- but plants have just have their own fascinating aura to them. Be it trees or grass, it’s hard for me to not be enthralled. I’m constantly bringing guidebooks outside with me and just seeing how many little prairie plants I can identify. Whichever plants I can’t find in our little collection of handbooks I then resort to computer, going into a searching frenzy that lasts an unknown amount of time, as my hyper focus on plant identification
An update on the bees (opens the original)
Read excerpt
It’s time to start feeding the bees again. As autumn steadily approaches, the food sources are starting to dwindle, though as of now they still have quite a few marigolds, sunflowers, Russian sage, zinnias and other wildflowers. Read excerpt
As the end of summer (thankfully!) approaches, I start looking forward to my favorite season. Perhaps that’s slightly due to the fact that autumn is my birth season, but I think the fall months will always be my favorite. There’s just so much to love- pumpkin spice, changing leaves, and the start of hockey and football! What’s not to love? Well, I suppose there’s one thing I haven’t adored for most of my life: Halloween. Yes, for most my life I’ve hated it with a passion, especially since people
Hormone implants in conventional cattle (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Any google search will tell you cattle don’t produce milk until pregnant. Any search will also inform you that steers, obviously, also do not give milk. Biologically that’s just not supposed to happen. Our meat should not be an endocrine disruptor, either. Nor should it be carcinogenic. The FDA assures us only safe amounts of residue are allowed to remain within the final cuts of meat on our grocery store shelves. Is there such a thing? In the USA, growth hormones are primarily used only for bee
