Saint Michael and All Angels (opens the original)

    Excerpt

    Read excerpt

We managed to capture most of the sermon on video, despite technical difficulties:We worship in a church called St. Michael and All Angels, and if we’re honest, most Episcopalians don’t know what to do with the second half of that title. We like Michael. We like the statues of the guy with the wings and the sword. My son especially likes the swords. We like the idea of evil being defeated. But what do we do with the angels? How do we, rational Episcopalians, thinking Christians, get our minds ar

    God’s Economics (opens the original)

    Excerpt

    Read excerpt

I don’t often encourage a more literal reading of scripture, but this parable is often treated as a problem. Sometimes it is spiritualized into a lesson about Jews and Gentiles. I wonder whether we do that because the economics are so uncomfortable.I grew up an upstanding member of the Protestant work ethic society, a capitalist. I was taught that hard work matters. God of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things..increase in us true religion. True religion. For over 1,500 years, the church has begun Sunday services with a short little prayer called the “Collect.” It is the prayer meant to *collect* us, to gather us in, to move us into the time of worship. Today’s prayer is one of the oldest. For at least a thousand years priests chanted, in Latin, asking God to “increase in us religion.” 550 years ago, when Archbishop Thomas Cranmer tran

    Un-Crispy (opens the original)

    Excerpt

    Read excerpt

Early Friday morning, I found myself out of bed watching the rain fall. The air smelled different. My body relaxed in the petrichor, and some tension I didn’t know I’d been holding released. It was the first soaking rain we’d received in months, and I felt it in my skin, in my body. These last weeks, with all those days over 100 degrees, I don’t know about you, but I think I had grown a little crispy, like the leaves of the apricot tree in my backyard, though I had deep watered it a couple times.
