70 Years Old (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Today would have been my mom’s 70th birthday. Seventy doesn’t seem that old and, for me, it also doesn’t feel that far away. It’s hard to believe that it has been almost five years since she died. Charlie was barely 8 years old, and in less than a month he’ll turn 13. Mavis was 4 years old, in preschool; now she is a fourth grader in the back half of elementary school. I had just started a new job, not even 6 months in and unable to access my PTO or employment benefits such as bereavement leave.
