There is a scene (above) from The City, a documentary made for the 1939 New York World’s Fair, in which riders on horseback canter through Radburn’s R Park. At first we assumed this was an anachronism, staged for the film. Clarence Stein and Henry Wright had planned Radburn to separate pedestrians and automobiles; they apparently had given no thought to this third form of traffic.But when we looked for records and photographs of horses in early Radburn, they began turning up.“Horseback riding’’
