July 31 (UPI) -- The April 2026 U.S. indictment of Sinaloa Gov. Rubén Rocha Moya and nine other current and former Mexican officials focused renewed attention on the profound corruption that organized crime has fostered within Mexico's political institutions. U.S. prosecutors allege that Rocha Moya and others conspired with Sinaloa Cartel leaders to facilitate drug trafficking in exchange for bribes and political support; the governor has denied the charges, which have not been proven in court.
