There is a place in Far West Texas where night skies are dark as coal and rivers carve temple-like canyons in ancient limestone. Here, at the end of the road, hundreds of bird species take refuge in a solitary mountain range surrounded by weather-beaten desert. Tomorrow morning, I will wake up at 5 am to head north to Massachusetts. This will be my final research trip for Plover. I have traveled to 13 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, and the Bahamas. It is fitting and on purpose that I am visiting Massachusetts last. With more than 1,200 breeding pairs, Massachusetts is the promised land of plovers.
