USDA lifts restrictions on NM’s only screwworm zone (opens the original)
Read excerpt
USDA officials announced Aug. 31 that New Mexico no longer needs to maintain a restricted “infested zone” in the southeast corner of the state aimed at preventing a New World screwworm (NWS) outbreak. State and federal officials demarcated the restricted zone, a circular area with a roughly 12-mile radius, on June 7 after state officials detected New Mexico’s first NWS case in a pet dog. The zone’s purpose was to stem a potential outbreak of the parasitic fly, whose maggots feed on live tissue.
