    Mark Twain was born Samuel Clemens in 1835 on November 30th (sharing the same birthday as Jonathan Swift), and grew up in the state of Missouri (when slavery was legal). After his father died, Samuel left school (that he hated) and became a printer’s apprentice, (he would later further his education by reading books at the public libraries).
