The Great Isaiah Scroll (opens the original)

    Excerpt · Neutral tone

    Read excerpt

It’s rare to have an Isaiah update, but I feel obliged to notify all the Isaiah fans of this newsletter that these are the last few days to see the incredible huge and ancient Isaiah scroll in Jerusalem at the Israel Museum. If you are anywhere nearby, please rush to see it before the exhibit closes on October 3rd.The scroll, found in 1947 by Bedouin shepherds, is an astonishing 717 centimeters long or 23 and a half feet. It was written in 125 BCE, so yes, it is more than two thousand years old.

Prayer as Poetry (opens the original)

    Excerpt · Positive tone

Everyone has a favorite prayer—even those of us who don’t pray. My favorite prayer is four lines long, and it is in both the Rosh Hashanah and the Yom Kippur liturgy. To me it’s a writer’s prayer; it asks God for the ability to speak, to express oneself, to find words that have meanings.I love finding it each year. I wrote about this in the past, but I am thinking about it again. Here it is, on the bottom of the page in the first image below.Subscribe nowEven if you don’t r

Reading About Painter Tobi Kahn (opens the original)

    Excerpt · Positive tone

    Read excerpt

I have been obsessively reading about the painter and sculptor Tobi Kahn and his work, as part of my preparation for this Sunday’s special poetry and art salon. In college, I double-majored in art history and writing, and I still love to read writing about art. It is undoubtedly an art form all its own.One theme of the many interviews with Kahn is the sense that his life and art are intertwined. As Rosh Hashanah approaches, I found myself returning to a comment he made about his sculpture HYYLAH
