Entering the city of Seraphim in blur of sweat and dust, Torrvash tore through the square, but a crowd impeded his path forward. The next day, Torrvash rose early and set out for the desert expanse long before the twin suns would break over the horizon. He intended to hunt two dustcrawlers and return their carcasses to Solkar before the day was out. Torrvash would defer the skinning to Solkar, so he would earn the full payment this time. Torrvash walked out into the endless expanse as the city of Seraphim ebbed behind him, dissolving into a sea of dunes. Sparse patches of grass grew in the shade of rock that jutted from the surface, splitting the sand. A dark splotch appeared in the ochre dust a few paces ahead of Torrvash, and beneath it, a myriad of grass was rustling in the hot, dry wind.Dustcrawlers were sure to be sleeping amongst the blades. They were nocturnal insects that would roam for food when the twin suns went down.

Torrvash had nowhere left to turn, so he decided to return to the Greasy Snake and hope the bartender might show him a little more kindness. He pushed open the tavern door. It seemed heavier than before, as if it carried the weight of his failure. The familiar scent of stale brew, smoke, and roasted meat drifted over him as he stepped inside. Behind the worn wooden counter stood the same bartender, polishing a mug.Novaheart's Substack thrives because of amazing readers
