A week-and-a-half ago, my partner Greg Luce & I went to New Bedford and Martha’s Vineyard, MA, to see graves & houses of his ancestors, who settled there in the 1600’s. Fascinating to explore New Bedford’s whaling (& abolitionist) history. Greg’s g.g. grandfather was one of the last whaling tycoons; his papers are in the Whaling Museum. On M. Vineyard, we found the house Greg’s ancestor Henry Luce, the first one to come from England, built in 1647. It’s been maintained and is now being used as t

Back to haiku soon, but. . . I recently wrote a short poem coming out of struggles w/ depression I’ve had a bit of lately, so thought I’d share it. My partner Greg—also a poet, who gives feedback on all I write—told me he thought this poem didn’t need ANY changes. First time he’s said THAT, so it might be good! This past week I found haiku coming to me not from things I see in nature (as I usually write about) but from my inner life & from working with elementary students. This one popped into my head when I woke up feeling good/normal after a few days of feeling kinda depressed. I’ll admit, I’m proud of it. ;-) : Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when publishedI finally find bright fruit among the dust. Taking a break from haiku inspired by my nature walks..This 1st haiku came to me while I was driving to a very Latino neighborhood near me to do my shift at “ICE watch”—patrolling the neighborhood for ICE vehicles or activity & reporting anything I spot to the organizing group (which does a LOT to help local immigrant community). ICE is def. in this neighborhood & has taken people away:Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when publishedRain specks on my windshield 7 a.m. Clo
