Now we’re gonna round up all those synchronicities into one big beautiful bonanza! In the spring of 1987, I moved west from Louisville to Los Angeles. Gave away my furniture, packed up stuff in a U-Haul rooftop carrier that fit on top of my little Mazda (Mom mailed a bunch of boxes of my stuff once I had an apartment). I was so stressed the night before I left that I barely slept. I drove only to Joplin, Missouri (cue up the “Route 66” song again!), and picked out a motel that had a pool I could

Enterprising writer that I am, I went ahead and wrote a spec Kate & Allie sitcom script to show to Howard Korder, the writer who was working on that TV show and who was having his short play Fun produced at Actors Theatre of Louisville.<img alt=

I worried a lot about the quality of my writing back in my younger years. After re-reading my play Talk Show (it went to the regionals of the American College Theatre Festival you may recall), I observed in my journal, “I am positively the most glib, slick, surfacy, breezy writer I know. I mean this in a negative way. Slim pickin’s for meat on bones. There were a few good exchanges but it was all pretty sitcom. I feel as if I can’t breathe. Can I go on? My play about euchre [card game popular in

And now back to our regularly scheduled program: what I learned about theatre at Actors Theatre of Louisville (not just dealing with an unstable co-worker).One of the ATL memories that’s seared into my brain is when I went to a rehearsal for Of Mice and Men. ATL did a “regular” theatrical production schedule when we weren’t doing the Humana Festival of New Plays or the Shorts productions. We also had those regular shows go overseas, and Of Mice and Men was headed to an arts festival in Hong Kong
