Sustained empathy is hard work when all of us are stressed (opens the original)

I went to Lowe’s for bird seed yesterday. Twenty to twenty five grackles arrive now most mornings and perch high up on the dead tree in my neighbor’s yard. I try mentally not to be a bird racist, but I am. They can strip the three feeders in a couple of hours while the sparrows and cardinals wait for what they leave behind.
