There she was in my feed.Pleased as punch.Yet another middle aged woman I know, showing off her shiny new badge. Not an actual badge, obviously. It’s not a denim jacket in 1983.I mean the other kind. The ones so many people are proudly wearing these days.“I’m this” or “I’m that”I have X condition, Z condition.Y?Because having a label is fa

2020 - The Lens that Never Leaves us (opens the original)

    Excerpt

    Read excerpt

As news of Dolly Parton’s death broke, I too felt a wave of sadness, but perhaps, of a different kind. For me, she epitomised something other than country music’s smart ‘dumb blonde’ and the rags to riches American dream…….It was how those we admire………can disappoint us.Had she died in 2006, 2016 or even 2019, I’d have been like the rest of ’em - giving it a bit of ‘Islands in the Stream’, indulging my ‘Whorehouse’. Shitshow changed everything.
