All The Things You Miss (opens the original)
Read excerpt
An old boyfriend of mine once said, “Trevy, life is a series of losses.”I hated that. It struck me as pessimistic (which he was). It was also a very unsympathetic response to some struggle I’d just shared with him. But he made me good at math, because:pessimistic + unsympathetic = ex<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1613905780946-26b73b6f6e11?crop=entropy&cs=tinysrgb&fit=max&fm=jpg&ixid=M3wzMDAzMzh8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwyMnx
Surreality in our Ordinary Days (opens the original)
Read excerpt
I thought I had made up this word: surreality. When it didn’t get flagged for a misspelling, I looked and discovered a pretty interesting history behind it.“Surrealism is an art and cultural movement that developed in Europe in the aftermath of World War I in which artists aimed to allow the unconscious mind to express itself, often resulting in the depiction of illogical or dreamlike scenes and ideas.” Wikipedia<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href="https://images.unsplash.com/photo
There's Only One Bad Day (opens the original)

My doctor (okay, she’s actually a nurse) tells me that my protein intake is atrocious and that at my age I need to step it up. She was also a vegetarian for a long time but returned to a limited-meat diet for the same reason.“A free-range chicken who lives at a small local farm with a good life only has one bad
Ways to Live as you Age (opens the original)
Read excerpt
I found a post about groups of women shacking up together late in life. They’re doing it as a more appealing solution to aging alone, or hoping kids will help, or tossing caution to the wind in an assisted living prison. I know it’s not really a prison, but it can turn out that way for some people. Compared to that, the hippie commune seems like an appealing option. Men could do it too, but I don’t know of anyone organizing men so I guess they’re on their own.<a class="image-link image2 is-viewa
Our Changing Relationships (opens the original)
Read excerpt
In my twenties I thought my friends were a kind of family. Maybe they were really. But those friendships changed over time as we all did. Growing up and making a new life will do this, but so will a maturing personality. Something initially held us to each other that may no longer exist.<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1711758915276-b5c76af547e7?crop=entropy&cs=tinysrgb&fit=max&fm=jpg&ixid=M3wzMDAzMzh8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwzNXx8ZnJpZW5kcyUyMGFwYXJ0fGV
