Day One - StarbottomI arrived in Starbottom and I parked up. I had decided that I would do a ride first, then I would go to the little barn where I was staying for the night before heading over to Swaledale.I unloaded my bike and put on my helmet. Attaching my Garmin and Gopro to my handlebars I set off, riding along the road which I knew well, this was now all very familiar to me.I wheeled along the quiet country road, and headed for the byway. I’m sure there was somewhere here that I had wante
If You’re Not Enjoying What You’re Doing, Why do it? (opens the original)

Enjoyment. Isn’t that the whole point of doing something? To enjoy what you're doing. On a recent ride of mine I had a chocolate bar at the local cairn, halfway through - at the turning point of my out and back. Not an energy gel or chew and not something for performance, but a chocolate bar.I sat ot the cairn with my bike leaning near me, looked out over the valley, unwrapped my chocolate and thought “hmm, i’ve had better tasting chocolate” I said to no-one.That moment wasn't a break from the r

I still want adventure, and I do like a challenge (but not the ‘I might die doing this’ kind). A longish ride and my map spread across a café table. Go big or

OK, I did suggest that we move to Scotland last year, great riding there I hear, but I need to work, have I bills to pay. I plan more in a saving Komoot routes that I may or may never ride, looking at campsites and hostels, wondering if I could cycle there stay over kind of way.I don’t know if there’s a proper name for it, but future oriented escapism is forever in
Have You Ever Set Off With No Real Plan (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Most (ok, all) of my rides start with a plan I like to know what I’m doing and where I’m going, all part of my new anxiety and overthinking. So usually I have a GPX route on Garmin with a café stop, point of interest and destination - all prepared well in advance. This time, this ride wasn’t one of those rides.I rolled out through the back garden and onto the track behind the house, and headed towards the country roads - my destination today was vague and my route was as yet not decided, the onl
