Vive le Nucléaire? (opens the original)

Around the time I was making my way through a NY middle school the nuclear power plant building boom was dwindling to a close. Facing safety and environmental concerns, construction delays and massive cost overruns, and, perhaps most importantly, bankers and investors ire from being lied to regarding said overruns, construction on new plants virtually stopped. In the US that is. Not sure about other places. The 1979 Three Mile Island kerfuffle was one of the events that helped to sway public opi

There was a time when coal was delivered to homes. Mostly for heating. I sometimes find chunks of coal lying about when I am working for customers with older homes. I have one sitting on my desk as a matter of fact. I look at it as a relic of a future past. Coal is still used for making electricity. But it’s days are numbered. According to Bloomberg NEF, the world now has reached 3 terawatts (TW) of solar electrical capacity. If that sounds like a lot, it is. It’s 3,000 gigawatts (GW). Or, you c

Mr. Magoo, is a fictional cartoon character created in 1949. If you are unfamiliar he is elderly, wealthy and visually challenged. At least that was the case as of June 16, the last time the war was supposed to be over. That works out to about $1 billion per day of hostilities. Turns out it takes a lot of mulla to bomb Mullahs*. And, by God, we’re willing to spend it. Now that hostilities have once again become increasingly hostile, the war’s total is surel

I am a people watcher. Not in a creepy way. At least I don’t think so. I’ve never been asked to leave some establishment due to my tendency to stare. So that’s a good sign. I consider my tendency to stare as more of scientific endeavor. Or so I like to think. I have no formal training. No PhD in behavioral studies for example. I’m more of a citizen scientist. Like Darwin. The similarities between us are actually quite uncanny now that I think about them. He also did not have a PhD, for example.
