The metronome of the steel drums was seductive. I heard their syncopated rhythms blending with soca as I made my way to Mas Camp. My skin was aglow with a shimmering bronzer, and my head was dressed in jewels. I felt like a dream. It was Caribana, Toronto’s Caribbean Carnival — a moment of recognition and celebration for Caribbean people, and I was a Mash Majesty masquerader.
